Refusing a Job Offer

21st Nov 2022 | Fintec Recruit Limited

It’s always a happy boost to know a company wants to hire us when we receive notification of a job offer. That being said, we might not always want to accept every job offer we receive. For example, if we’re looking for a position that comes with a higher salary, a shorter commute or we just change our mind entirely, it’s best to know how to appropriately turn down a job offer.

Here are a few tips FINTEC recruit thinks are important to consider when refusing a job offer!

Be certain

It may seem obvious, but it’s important to be absolutely certain that you want to decline the job offer. This is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly and requires a great deal of consideration. If you have any questions left unanswered about the role, take the initiative, and contact the company and find out more before making the decision to refuse.

Don’t delay

It’s best to make your decision without spending too much unnecessary time. Once you have made up your mind, you’ll want to contact the company as soon as possible. It may be tempting to neglect to give a response to a job offer if you wish to decline, though it’s important to notify the company so they can move on with their recruitment process. You’ll often be given a time period to think over the offer, so if you choose to decline, don’t be afraid to let them know before the final day.

Show gratitude

When declining, make sure to show your gratitude and appreciation for the company’s consideration. Recruitment is a lengthy and costly process for businesses, so by acknowledging their kindness, you can gracefully decline any offer and allow the company to continue looking elsewhere.

Say why

It’s useful for the hiring company to know why you have chosen to decline the job offer. This can help them with future recruitment processes and find ways to improve their practices. You may feel hesitant to do so, but you won’t need to go into lengthy detail about exactly why. You can simply state that you don’t feel like it’s the right fit for you and nothing more. Whatever your reason may be, you can give a simple statement without offering a large in-depth explanation as to why that is the case.

Keep the lines of communication open

It is entirely your choice as to whether you’d like to offer to stay in touch with the company when declining your offer. If you feel comfortable, you can ask them to get in touch with you about any other roles they deem you suitable for. This can also be an excellent opportunity to expand your professional network and open up future opportunities for yourself.
